the characters in it’s always sunny in philadelphia are your classic villains, your hollywood monsters and by all means i should hate them but god i don’t. i love them, i love them with all the terrible parts of my heart and maybe some of the good parts too. i love these little horrible codependent villains. i love their friendship. i love that they’re horrible to each other- that they’re selfish and manipulative but at the end of the day they can’t leave each other. bc horrible people don’t deserve better friends, they deserve people just as gruesome and just as awful as they are. they deserve each other and i say that with love. they /need/ each other not in the sappy sense but in the literal sense. bc outside their gang they’re losers. they’re nothing. and i love them for it. i love their codependency bc it’s not built on love or trust but on necessity. bc they’re villains after all and villains should be alone but not these villains man, no way. these monsters need each other, need each other to remind themselves they are breathing, they are still there, they still matter- in some horrible way. less than rats maybe but still, they are here and they matter if only for the sake of the gang. and i love them for it, i love them for their awful purpose. i love them bc they need each other, bc they are as desperate as they are horrible. i love them like i love the gum i just missed on the sidewalk, the kind i’m glad isn’t stuck to me but that i’m glad is stuck to something. that i want to write about and write about and that i would have chewed 5 days ago, before everyone threw in on the ground. i love these monsters bc they’ve never looked in the mirror. bc they see themselves completely wrong, they see each other completely wrong. i love these monsters bc they don’t know they are monsters, bc they believe what they’re doing is just, is right. they’re the worst people in the world but i love them bc they always lose. bc they are not glorified, bc they are dirty and poor and losers. i love these monsters bc i never root for things to get better, bc i never have faith in them to do the right thing. i love these monsters bc they’re the worst parts of me. they’re the parts of me that seem a little bit better when they’re exaggerated, when monsters take them and spin them out of control until you can’t help but laugh. i love these monsters bc they’re the worst parts of everyone i know and it makes something in you disgustingly happy, to see everyone’s flaws thrown together, to see everyone’s faults mended together into the pathetic lives of dysfunctional bar owner monsters that despite their horribleness i can still /love./ that i can learn to love a pile of flaws, and god maybe that’s awful but it feels /good./ i love them bc it’s the perfect lives for your classic villains to live. not one of death, not one of loneliness- but one of constant horribleness, one where you know they’ll always lose, one where they’ll never change, one where they don’t really matter except maybe to each other. one where there’s a little pity and a lot of guilty love and no rainbow on the other side. bc no monsters deserves a happy endings but maybe it just seems right for them to have people to share their horribleness with. maybe it’s the only ending where we can kind of win and they can lose in a way where they don’t know they’re losing, in a way that hurts a little less. and maybe none of this warrants love, but i love them anyways. i love them, my gross little monsters.
